Fat tires, 14-speed gears and electric motor, Hanebrink Extreme terrain bikes provide the industry with the first useful electric assist bike.  Electric bikes in the industry provide power from similar motors, but none have the styling, practicality and usability of the Hanebrink X bikes.

Leisure and competitive cyclists have all considered riding their bikes on the beach, many try but find it difficult to maneuver a traditional mountain bike or cruiser on a sandy beach.  A trip by the mall for a quick purchase or cruise around town to just enjoy an evening can all be supported by the line of bikes Hanebrink has designed.

These bikes have been tested as hunting companions, extreme weather vehicles, police vehicles and simple cruisers.  The line of bikes has multiple applications and configurations to support most anything our imagination can conjure.

dunesIt’s little surprise that the Hanebrink X bikes were designed by six time Mountain Bike national class champion and former U.S. National Team member Dan Hanebrink. It’s based on 1993’s Extreme Terrain fat tire pedal bike and is made to order at Hanebrink in Big Bear Lake, California.  Dan says, “These bikes are intended as utility vehicles.  They won’t replace traditional bikes, but will compliment them and their riders.  We also hope to see more of these on the road, used not only for sport, but also for those short rides.  We hope folks will consider using this bike for a mall trip of a few miles rather than start up their car.”

The bike has its 600 Watt brushless electric motor positioned in the middle of the frame – just above the pedal crank – to optimize center of gravity, improve maneuverability and provide stability. The motor can power the bike up to 20 mph, without pedaling but the rider should be able to get higher speeds with proper gear selection.  With the correct bicycle gear, pedaling will allow additional speed with minor effort. With good pedal assist riders can reach speeds up to 35 mph.

The Hanebrink X bikes lithium ion 10 amp hour battery (LiFePO4) will give riders enough power for an hour’s ride, additional batteries can be added to extend the battery life to over  five hours.

6061- T6 aircraft seamless aluminum tube frame, hydraulic disk brakes and a carbon fiber handlebars are where the throttle and motor controller is mounted. The pedal-power hardware comes courtesy of Shimano and the wheels and hubs are made by Hanebrink. Impressive-looking 20 x 8-inch tubeless tires complete the specifications.

Both pedal-only and hybrid pedal/electric versions are assembled to order, the former weighing in at about 45 pounds and the latter about 80 pounds, depending on configuration.

These bikes recently took first place at the Interbike Hill Climb Challenge, a third of a mile sprint up a six per cent gradient hill. A Hanebrink sponsored rider powered in front of professional riders to secure a decisive win in the first of an annual competition especially created for electric assist bikes. The race was sponsored by the Light Electric Vehicle Association (LEVA).
